UGC creator contract basics: usage rights, revisions and payment terms
A good agreement protects both sides. You do not need to be a lawyer, but you do need to know what you are signing. This is general information, not legal advice. Read every agreement carefully.
Deliverables
The contract should state how many videos, which format and length, and what you deliver, such as raw files or edited versions. Vague deliverables lead to arguments later.
Usage rights
This is the most important clause. It says where and for how long the brand can use your videos: their organic channels, paid ads, their website, or all of the above. Ads usually carry broader rights than organic posts, and that should be reflected in the agreement. Be clear on duration and platforms.
Exclusivity
Some brands ask you not to work with competitors for a period. If they do, it should be limited in time and category.
Revisions
Agree how many rounds of changes are included and what counts as a revision versus a new request. One or two rounds is common.
Deadlines
Dates for the first delivery, feedback and final files. Include what happens if either side is late.
Payment terms
- How much, in what currency, and how it is paid.
- When it is paid: upfront, on delivery or on approval.
- Who covers fees and taxes.
Content you may not use
Check the brief for claims you must not make, such as health or income promises. Following them protects you as well as the brand.
If something is not written down, assume it is not agreed.
